WINE EVALUATION METHODS

WineCOW’s evaluation methods are different from pretty much any known rating guide. Most of the wines are purchased and reviewed at the recommendation of friends, local wine merchants and other industry sources. Therefore, just like the everyday wine buyer, we listen to what people have to say about the wine and then check it out for ourselves. The result is an open comparison of our findings to that of the industry, as well as a value-based assessment of cost to overall quality of the wine.
All wines are evaluated under equal conditions to ensure objectivity for each wine or winery. Evaluations consist of two consecutive glasses (4oz average poor) each, rather than the industries minimal 1-2 tastes, for a more true wine drinking experience. This way we can assess how the wine begins to open up after it’s had time to breathe in the glass and as the mouth grows accustom to all the flavors.
Each wine is stored in our temperature-regulated underground cellar until served for review, which is never long. Price is not a consideration in the general evaluation of the wine, but does get mentioned as part of the overall review, nor is a winery’s presence/stature in the marketplace. Prices for each wine are listed in U.S. dollars unless otherwise indicated.

HOW TO SUBMIT WINES FOR REVIEW

If you are a Washington or Northwest (including Oregon & Idaho) winery and would like to submit wines to WineCOW.com for review and/or rating, send 1-2 bottles of each wine to our shipping address listed below. Feel free to submit new wines whenever they are released, or at any point throughout the year prior to releasing the next vintage. We also encourage wineries to send us their pre-released wines as long as it’s the same bottling that will go to the public (no barrel samples unless pre-arranged). Please include a release date when the wine will be available for purchase.
